Custom Domain

A domain name is your address on the internet. It’s the part of your email address following the “@” symbol and the main name in a website address. For example, your website might be yourbusiness.com and your email might be you@yourbusiness.com

Custom Domain vs Free Domain

When you use a free email address from an email provider like Yahoo, Google, or Microsoft, you get assigned a generic domain. Every email, marketing or otherwise, ends in gmail, hotmail, yahoo, outlook, etc. In most cases, these work, but they often don’t have the same level of professionalism as using your own domain. A custom domain tells people this is your business, not Google or Microsoft.

Why a Domain Name Matters

A custom domain name affects how people recognize and trust you. When someone sees your name in an email or types your website into a browser, they can make quick assumptions, often without even realizing it. You want those assumptions to be positive ones! A custom domain matters because it’s:

  • Professional – A custom domain looks more professional and trustworthy, especially for the purpose of advertising your business. Anyone can create a gmail and claim to be a business, but your business is not temporary.
  • Recognizable – As you send emails and market your business, a custom domain makes it easier for people to remember and recognize you because you stand out. People have trouble recognizing and trusting emails that come from generic addresses and websites with another company’s domain attached to them.
  • Consistent – Your domain name is yours, and so it signals to your customers that you’re invested in your business identity.

For most business, a custom domain name is one of the smallest changes that provides the biggest long term benefit. What if I don't have a website?

That's okay. A domain is simply the registered name that everything connects to. If you don't have a website, you can still register a domain so that it doesn't get taken by somebody else. Also, if you have an email address, you can use your domain for just your email. If you do have a website, you can use a custom domain for both! If you're looking for a website, see our Custom Programming section for information about Custom Websites.

Can I have more than one domain?

Yes! If you need more than one domain for your business, we can set up multiple upon request. For example, we use both buerer.com and buerercomputer.com. You might benefit from multiple domains if your customers know your business by multiple names.
